Writing
A good story requires intense listening, sharp observation, subtle questions and trust. I tried to get there for every article—from a quick meeting on the beat to a long-form narrative news feature.
Articles
Stories come at you from so many places when you are paying attention.
A story about a soldier with PTSD—one of the earliest to tackle the subject—began with a conversation with his wife at a food pantry. A year-long project about one man’s determination to find an indoor job grew out of a quick piece on pizza delivery drivers.
I wrote about the the most American of cookies decamping for Mexico through the eyes of the workers on the two assembly lines, looking at how a good job in the US turned into a stable but low-paying one across the border.
Editorials
Governors, senators, mayors and candidates come to the editorial board to defend their records and make their points. I was there to listen past the talking points, testing the numbers, pressing on the gaps and deciding what readers needed to know.
That instinct to cut through, find the real story and communicate it clearly is the same one I bring to strategic communications work today.
