Writing
A good story requires intense listening, sharp observation, subtle questions and establishing trust. I tried to get there for every article—from a meeting on the beat to a narrative news feature.
Articles
Stories come at you from so many places and it’s up to you to recognize them.
One of the very early stories about soldiers with PTSD came out of an interview with his wife at a food pantry. A year-long project about a gas station attendant’s determination to find an indoor job came from a quick piece about pizza delivery drivers.
I wrote about the most American of cookies, the Fig Newton, decamping for Mexico through the eyes of the workers on the two assembly lines, looking at how a good job in the US turned into a stable but low-paying one across the border.
Editorials
Governors, senators, mayors and hopefuls sit at the editorial board table and defend, explain or promote their policies. Are they being straight? Do the numbers bear them out? Are their constituents well served? What are the problems in their districts? It’s up to the editorial board to consider, discuss, decide and inform readers.
